Clootie McToot Traditional Dumplings
“Clootie McToot" dumplings are lovingly prepared, following my family's traditional recipe. This recipe has been passed down the generations and is now kept safely with me in my home in Old Abernethy. Abernethy was originally the Southern Pictish capital of Scotland and the village sits on the borders of Perthshire, which is route to the Highlands, and Fife which is on the banks of the beautiful River Tay. There is something nostalgic about a Clootie McToot dumpling. It has a flavour and texture that takes you back in time. Lovingly prepared with carefully selected ingredients, boiled to perfection then vacuum sealed for freshness and long life. These lovely, old-fashioned puddings are bursting with Scottish charm! They are a genuine taste of Scotland. You can order online or visit our shop at 59 Main St, Abernethy - our shop is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 12:00 - 4:00pm.
Please see our SHOP PAGE for details of our mouthwatering 'Festive Flavour' range available as well as ordering date details - Our shop will be reopening 31st January 2019.
History & Folklore
Of Scottish Clootie Dumplings
The original " Clootie" had charms and coins added into the recipe so that diners would receive a piece of luck for the future. Finding a coin would mean wealth, a ring signified marriage and a wishbone promised the finder their heart's desire. The man who found the button and the woman who found the thimble would stay together. Unfortunately, this is the one part of the recipe we currently miss out. Once you have tasted our Clooties we hope you find Clootie McToot to be your future favourite pudding.

...have to say about our dumplings
I have tried both the traditional recipe and one of the "new" flavours, in this case chocolate orange. Both were packed with delicious fruits and spices, and when eaten warm with cream or custard, tasted rich and decadent, especially the chocolate orange! I equally enjoyed eating them cold with a a cuppa. Packaging and presentation lovely. A great blend of traditional with a modern twist. Made an extremely attractive present, and just that bit different from the usual chocolates or wine! With tartan trimmings, they could make a welcome alternative to the usual "gifts from Scotland".
Finally got to taste the traditional Clootie Dumpling tonight and it was sheer delight. The texture and flavours were sublime, even dad had to admit it was the best dumpling he had EVER tasted and he's renowned for being hard to please. The personal service recieved from Michelle was outstanding. I especially loved the tartan cloot (cloth) it came wrapped in - what a lovely touch! I'll certainly be buying some of the other favours for Christmas presents (and of course to sample myself).
Dear Michelle, Many thanks for all your efforts to make my friend Beth's birthday a step above. From turning out a delicious gluten and dairy free Clootie McToot dumpling to getting it to the USA in perfect timing for our celebration! She was so surprised and we totally enjoyed the awesome treat. Again, thank you for all your effort and the outstanding product you produced.
I got two dumplings at the good food show in Glasgow, the traditional one reminds me of the one’s my granny used to make, delicious. Still have the rhubarb and ginger one to try.
We had a traditional dumpling made by Michelle at Christmas time. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I've found a new favourite though...baileys and chocolate orange. It smells amazing and tastes just as good! Not overly sweet it's the ideal partner sliced, heated and eaten with a cup of tea.
The best dumpling I've ever tasted , rhubarb and ginger is awesome ,well done ,I'll be trying the whole range.
I have had the pleasure of trying Michelle's 2 new Clootie Dumpling recipes:- Rhubarb & Ginger and also Pear & Apple. As I had ordered the Rhubarb & Ginger for family gifts and also as a treat for ourselves - Michelle vacuum packed the clooties and packaged them up with lovely cloth, added a tag which included listing of ingredients and heating/storing instructions and also tartan ribbon. These extra details were very helpful to ourselves and family. What a delight they are! Lovely mixture of the Rhubarb & Ginger mixed together along with all of the other ingredients, the flavours are fantastic and they are so moist. Michelle had added a few samples of Pear & Apple in with my order - they were delightful too and I could really taste cinnamon within it, which I love. Well done Michelle, hope all goes well xx
I had to write and let you know how lovely your Clootie McToot dumpling was. It remained moist in its air tight bag all the way home. It was so rich and full of fruit, please let me know when you are taking orders as I would like to let my friends try some, they would make great unusual gifts. A very satisfied customer.
After discovering this business recently I thought it would be the perfect gift for my dad for Fathers Day. He grew up enjoying his Aunt Jeanies clootie dumpling so knew to order the traditional flavour for him. His eyes lit up on opening, it didn't last long and no one else even stood a chance to get a taste. Michelle replied to my enquiry very quickly and dumpling was ready for collection shortly after. Loved how they come presented too.

I have had the delight of sampling all the dumplings Clootie McToot have to offer. Each and everyone is absolutely scrumpcious! Michelle manages to delicately balance the subtle flavours and textures to produce beautiful puddings. All the ingredients are the best to hand, gathered from local suppliers, and I think it makes all the difference to the taste. A mouthful or two at the end of a meal or as a daytime cup of tea treat leaves both mind and soul satisfied. My personal favourite is a warm, chocolate orange dumpling, with a feshly ground cup of coffee. Heavenly...
